Insurance or archive photography is one of the best ways to document your valuables to aid in recovery if stolen, or for insurance claims. Good, clear pictures aid in appraising an item, and reduce research time. They also clearly record any damage (or lack thereof) so depreciation can be honestly calculated and not assumed.
One example in the industry is that books are typically compensated at $1 per inch of shelf. This is likely fine for used paperbacks, but what if you have leatherbound and hardcover first editions or professional textbooks? Some of these sell on Amazon for tens if not hundreds of dollars. If you do not have all your receipts or a current appraisal by a professional in the field, claiming the proper amount of the loss will be difficult.
While it's certainly possible, and not a bad idea, to take your own snapshots, as a professional in the field I offer several advantages.
First of all, I have the proper gear to get good closeups without glare or distortion. This greatly aids in appraisal.
Second, I can provide the documentation and chain of custody to prove the images were taken where and when I state. A snapshot without proper documentation is hard to place to a particular location, date and time, and can be dismissed if there are any questions or discrepancies.
Finally, as a disinterested third party, I can add credibility to images used for insurance disputes at any level, from adjuster to courtroom.
I frequently set up at trade shows for such photos, and can travel to your location if my expenses are paid.
Items to consider for this type of documentation are:
If I am to shoot at your location, it is best to leave everything in place until I arrive--photos of your art hung and displayed add to the credibility of the claim. I can then take closeups of the condition and provide a photographic journal on CD.
These photos will be scaled, timed and dated, watermarked and UNEDITED to preserve their admissibility. My invoice will help document the date, time and location for future reference.
You may also consider having me take portrait shots of items such as your boats or motorcycles, so you can proudly display them in your home or office.
RATES:
My at-show rates vary on the product. Firearms are typically $25 for the first one, $10 each additional. You are welcome to bring other items to these shoots to save time and money.
On location, I charge $50/hr, with a 3 hour minimum. Travel expenses may apply if the distance is outside my commute area.
I will provide you with a CD containing the images and supporting documentation, and reuse my memory cards. Additional CDs with the identical information are $20 each.
I can archive a copy of the CD in my office for $25 a year, should you desire a backup.
If a claim is made, brief phone consultations with your adjuster or agent are free. Extensive calls or consultations in person or in court are billed at $50/hr plus travel expenses.
